WELCOME to Carpinteria High School's AVID Tutor Progtam

The AVID Tutor Volunteer Program has been operating in the Carpinteria Unified School District for three years in the middle school and the high school. The results have been very promising. We are now on a campaign to recruit tutors to allow us to expand and more fully implement the AVID Tutor Program for the 2008-2009 school year.

Background

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a middle school through senior high school academic program. Its purpose is to prepare under served students for four-year college eligibility by supporting their academic and motivational needs.

AVID is dedicated to helping students who are academically "in the middle," but have test scores, the desire, and individual motivation which reflect their potential for success. AVID students are enrolled in a rigorous curriculum which includes honors and advanced placement courses and they receive support for success in this rigorous curriculum through the AVID elective class, a regularly scheduled elective within the normal school day. They participate in motivational activities in order to maintain the motivation required to complete a university/college preparatory path.

AVID Tutors, typically college students and / or high school juniors and seniors, are part of the AVID program. As role models and as specialty tutors, they guide students toward academic and personal excellence so that students can see themselves through a program that will allow them entrance to post-secondary education. An AVID Tutor is an active participant in the learning, growth, and personal development of the students.

Potential tutors must apply for the position and schedule an interview with Ms. Young, the AVID coordinator at the high school.

Training

Training classes will take place at key times during the calendar year. For details of when the next session starts, check with the AVID coordinator, Ms. Young, once you have accepted in the program.

AVID Tutors assist the students achieve their full potential by facilitating subject area tutorial groups. Tutors are trained to use questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students. The training consists of sixteen hours of preliminary workshop with refreshers and graded observations during the year.
